THRESHOLDS - Second workshop on statistical identification of thresholds
After the success of the first workshop in Drøbak last year we will arrange a follow-up workshop in September this year.
Hands-on workshop on statistical methods for threshold identification and regime shift detection
Where: Cap de Faro Lighthouse, Mallorca (60 km east of Palma)
When: 9-12 September, 2007 (arrival on Sunday, departure on Wednesday/Thursday morning)
Who can apply: All THRESHOLDS partners, but in particular people with case study data sets that need to be analyzed for possible thresholds and regime shifts. Number of participants must for practical reasons be limited to 12.
How to apply: Write a short expression of interest describing the data set you want to work on and what hypotheses you may have defined for it, together with a with a short summary of your background in statistics, especially to what extent you have familiarity with statistical software tools like R, S-plus, SAS, etc. Send it to Jacob Carstensen (jac@dmu.dk) or Tom Andersen (tom.andersen@bio.uio.no) before August 15th, 2007.
Workshop content: Short lectures on basic principles (time series analysis, change-point detection, model selection, etc., the list of topics is also open to suggestions from you), main emphasis on work with your own data and on discussions in plenary and in small groups.
Preparations: In order to work as efficiently as possible, you will be requested to submit your data set in advance so that we can have an interactive process where we try to make the data ready for analysis before you attend the workshop. We will also ask you to formulate specifically the thresholds you anticipate to be present and how these should manifest themselves in data. Experiences from last workshop was that much time was devoted to data analysis and hypotheses formulation - in order to get as far as possible, it would be great if this work could be ready prior to the workshop.
Practicalities: The lighthouse can fit a maximum of 14 people setting the limit. Carlos will cover the accomodation costs at the lighthouse. We will also have to organise the food ourselves, at least for breakfast and lunch. The lighthouse is not accessible by public transport, so we have to organise some rental cars to get from/to the airport. We will organise these logistics in more details once we know who is coming and at what times. Regino Martínez (viearmc@uib.es) will be in charge of local logistics and arrangements.
